Where Does Your Mind Go?

“Where your mind goes, your life follows.” These words from Dr. Caroline Leaf are in her book, Think Learn Succeed Where does your mind go? Is it producing the life you want to be living? I’m asking myself these questions. Dr. Leaf goes on to say, “you can design and sculpt your brain with your thoughts.” Our brains have the power to choose what type of thoughts we want to have.  That fact is simply amazing! We are indeed fearfully and wonderfully made!

After finishing a chapter in the book, I grab my Bible to search for verses to put things in perspective for me.  As I flip open the pages, my mind goes to an old memory verse.  Isaiah 26:3 in the HCSB version says,

“You will keep the mind that is dependent on You in perfect peace, for it is trusting in You.”

This verse played a pivotal role in my life the first time I had surgery. I kept repeating it to myself, and it calmed my spirit and my racing thoughts.

This passage comes from a song that Isaiah says will be sung in the land of Judah.  I can almost hear my Great Uncle singing, “Peace, peace, wonderful peace, coming down from the Father above!” Do you know that old hymn? Just like the verse in Isaiah, it repeats the word ‘peace.’ In Hebrew, the verse would actually read ‘shalom, shalom.’ ‘Peace, peace.’ Perfect peace is promised to the mind that leans on God.

Perfect Peace

We find confirmation of this in Philippians 4:7, “And the peace of God, which surpasses every thought, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. “

Peace stands guard over our hearts and minds. If we pray and give it over to Him, the peace of God keeps watching out for us.

What else are we told about peace?

  • We must pursue it. Hebrews 12:14
  • It is the result of righteousness. Isaiah 32. 17
  • The fruit of righteousness is sown in peace. James 3:18
  • The mind-set of the Spirit is life and peace. Romans 8:6
  • Peace is a fruit of the Spirit. Galatians 5:22
  • The LORD blesses His people with peace. Psalms 29:11
  • Loving God’s instructions brings us abundant peace. Psalm 119:165

Does your mind race ahead of God like mine does now and then? How many times have you asked, “what if?”  Are there any distorted thoughts that are holding you hostage? If we desire a peaceful mind, then we need to pursue it. We need to sow peace to cultivate peace.  Our mindset needs to be driven by peace.  We must fall in love with His word and the instructions He gives us. And we need to remember that ” Where your mind goes, your life will follow!”

Let’s Reflect: It’s important to think about your thinking. Where does your mind go when it wanders? Make a list of your recurring thoughts. As I ponder my list I realize that my need in this season is peace. What do you need?

Let’s Pray: God, we are grateful that You have designed our minds in such an intricate way. Father, help us to fix our thoughts on You. Help us to pray and give You our concerns so that Your peace will guard our hearts and minds.  Holy Spirit, move in our hearts and minds. Show us where we need more of You in our thought life.  In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
