In my desperation I prayed, and the LORD listened; he saved me from all my troubles. Psalms 34:6 NLT
If I’m honest, after writing about Jesus’ custom of prayer, it’s felt more like work. I am getting closer to my first bodybuilding competition, and my carbs are low, and my energy is depleted. It’s a struggle to gather my thoughts and try to focus, but my mind often wanders, and the words come slowly. I found an answer to my struggle in a commentary written by Thabiti Anyabile. He says, “We must pray until we pray.”
Perhaps the beginning of prayer is when our prayers become more than words.
We can pray until worry gives way to trust, until our hurried thoughts grow still, and until our need to control every outcome loosens its grip. This isn’t about manufacturing a feeling or earning God’s attention. It’s about showing up even when our prayer feels dry, the answers seem far away, and all we can manage is to whisper, “Lord, help me.”
Sometimes the most meaningful prayers begin with simple faithfulness. We linger a little longer, listen a little more, and allow God’s truth to speak louder than our fears.
And somewhere, somewhere in that sacred space, something begins to change. Our circumstances may remain the same, but our hearts find new strength. We discover a peace that relieves our anxiety and receive courage to take the next step.
So let’s bring the distractions, questions, and our weariness to Him. Perfect words are not required to connect with our faithful God.
Talk to Him when the words flow freely, and when they don’t. We must pray until we pray. Let prayer draw us into deeper trust, greater surrender, and a renewed awareness of God’s presence.
