Keep us Safe

Temptation is something we all face, whether we admit it or not. For me, it often appears in ordinary moments, when I’m tired, frustrated, or stretched beyond my allotment of grace. I’ve had days where the wrong attitude came too quickly. Days when the patience I had in the morning was gone by midday, and the reaction I knew wasn’t right was already forming. Times when just one more piece turned into the entire package being devoured. Moments like these remind me how much I need God’s guidance; not after I stumble, but before I do. And as I pray for my family and loved ones, I need Him to keep us safe. That’s exactly what Jesus points to in the prayer He teaches.

And lead us not into temptation. Luke 11:4 ESV

Lead Us Not into Temptation

God does not and will not tempt His children. When we pray, “Lead us not into temptation,” we are asking the Father to shepherd our path forward. It is our humble admission that we need His help navigating the situations in life where our faith could falter. We are asking Him to guard our hearts, redirect our steps, and strengthen our resolve when the wrong choice begins to look appealing.

The Message translation puts it this way:

Keep us safe from ourselves and the devil. Luke 11:2–4 MSG

Keep Us Safe

God knows that difficult circumstances can shape our faith and refine our character. He also reminded us that in this world we will have trouble. Life will always bring testing, but temptation happens in the moment when testing tries to seduce us into compromise. It’s when impatience, pride, anger, or selfishness begin to whisper that their way is easier. It’s when obedience and self-interest stand side by side, and the easier path calls our name. Jesus teaches us to ask for safety before those moments arrive.

“Lead us not” reminds us that faith is not just about willpower. It’s about walking closely with the Father, because He alone sees the path ahead. Each time we pray these words, we place our steps in His hands and trust His guidance to keep us aligned with Him.

Sometimes the most powerful prayer is also the simplest.

“Father, keep us safe from temptation.”
