Last week, we looked at wholehearted acceptance, the first step in trusting the process. The second step is to apply yourself consistently to the process. Whether in the gym or on a walking trail, I took the time to ponder these red words in the Bible this week.
“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.” Matthew 7:24 NLT
Listening to Christ and following His teaching transforms us. We go from being unfamiliar with His words to a familiar, intimate connection. His teaching transforms and connects. It reaches out to us by calling us.
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28-29 ESV
Come to Me: This phrase is an urgent imperative that requires a response. How will you respond?
Take My yoke: This phrase denotes lifting and carrying upwards. Will you lift His yoke and place it over you?
Learn from Me: This phrase indicates the active process of acquiring the type of learning that transforms the learner. Are you ready to allow Him to help you grow and change?
Learn From Me
Transformative learning comes through Christ’s teaching. This means that learning from Him is not merely an intellectual pursuit of acquiring head knowledge. Learning from Him creates change.
What Can We Learn From Christ?
1. We learn to do what is right in God’s eyes. In the book of Matthew, the first words we hear from Jesus are about obedience to God’s requirements. (Matthew 3:15)
2. We learn self-denial. Obedience has a price. We prove our obedience by carrying our cross and following Him daily. (Luke 9:23)
3. We learn the value of being loved and loving others. As Christ loves us, we must love others. His love is unconditional, sacrificial, and eternal. May how we love others reflect how we have experienced His love. (John 13:34)
Apply Yourself Consistently
We transform through consistently applying the process of learning from Him daily. And He provides rest and shares the burden of being yoked with us. Lord, may we be forever changed as we allow You to teach us, and may we fall deeper in love with You.
