Does God Command Us To Be Strong?

Yesterday, I saw a post on social media where this person listed several Bible verses that made them a better powerlifter. The caption accompanying the verse said, “God commands us to be strong.” Does God command us to be strong? One of the verses they used was Joshua 1:9

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭1‬:‭9‬ ‭NIV‬‬

As a powerlifter, I have one image of strong in my head. However, as a Christian, I have another view of what God is saying. I also have favorite verses that inspire me to be a better lifter. But, I don’t see this verse as a clarion call for everyone who loves the Lord to get in the gym and develop their physical strength. It’s a command to grow strong in emotional and spiritual fortitude. It’s an exhortation to rely on Him. And it’s a promise that He will always be with us.

True Strength & Courage

True strength and courage are built on the foundation of God’s word, His presence, and His power.  Joshua had to be strong in this new position as a leader, following in the footsteps of Moses. He had to be strong enough to obey God’s word. His calling required him to meditate on God’s laws and lead the people to the land God had promised them. He had to be strong enough not to let his ego override God’s purpose and plans.

Does God Command Us to be Strong?

In pondering this question I know that I will never reach my potential as a woman of God if I focus solely on developing physical strength. Instead I would encourage everyone to glean the principles from the passage and use the verse to help us forge ahead in life. Let us cling to the empowering promise, “for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go,” as we prepare for whatever God has in store for us. But let’s not build a theology that says everyone must strength train. We can be passionate about health and wellness, but may our greatest zeal be to have intimacy with Christ.
