The First Taste

My popcorn recipe is very straightforward. I make it the same way every time. I use a tablespoon of coconut oil for the bottom of the pot. After it melts I add enough popcorn kernels to cover the bottom in a single layer, put on the lid, and let them cook on medium heat until the kernels stop popping. There’s something special about the first taste of your favorite food. Whether it’s a ripe piece of fruit, a sip of hot coffee on a chilly morning, or a handful of freshly popped popcorn at end of the day. That first taste stirs our expectation for what’s to come, preparing the body to receive more. Scripture invites us to experience a first taste of His presence each day:

Open your mouth and taste, open your eyes and see— how good God is. Blessed are you who run to him. ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭34‬:‭8‬ ‭MSG‬‬

Let’s appreciate His Word like a beautifully set table piled high with delectable goodness. He invites us to take it in, experience its richness, and see His goodness for ourselves.

The First Taste

That first taste of truth is sweet. It may come through a verse speaking directly into our situation. Or perhaps through realizing that God Himself is speaking directly to us. Whatever the experience, that priceless encounter carries a richness that is hard to forget. His Word is alive, it stirs up hope, and awakens the soul.

But just like physical food, the first bite is meant to lead to a spiritual meal that is part of ongoing nourishment for the soul. God’s Word is our daily bread, sustaining us repeatedly. There is something special about a taste of Him. It reminds us of His goodness and leaves us wanting more.

Take some time to have a first encounter with God’s Word, let it stir up gratitude. And if you’ve yet to experience it, His invitation stands: “Taste and see that He is good.”  May that taste awaken a lifelong hunger for the One who truly satisfies.
