I am convinced that strength is a skill. A skill we learn and master strength over the course of time. Physical strength isn’t just about muscle mass; strength training requires the brain and body to work together efficiently. I am discovering that over time, with each repetition, each workout, my skills expand. On Monday I had a test of my physical strength in preparation for an upcoming powerlifting competition. I had to perform each of the three required lifts (squat, bench, and deadlift) to see how much weight I could handle.
Test me, Lord, and try me; examine my heart and mind. Psalms 26:2 CSB
Test Me, Lord
The psalmist asked God to test his heart and mind. Since mental resilience is also a learned skill, developed through intentional practice, it can be tested. It is tested through challenges, warfare, and the daily aspects of life. Mental strength is not something you’re simply born with—it’s built.
Spiritual strength, or strength of the heart, just like physical and mental strength, requires consistent practice, discipline, and intentional growth. Studying God’s word, prayer, and worship are all skills that we must hone to develop spiritual resilience for our good and His glory.
Strength is a Skill
When we train the body we learn discipline, which leads us to mental and spiritual resilience. As we develop mental strength it helps us push through physical limits, reinforcing growth. In turn, maturing in spiritual strength provides purpose and perspective, keeping the body, mind and soul aligned with deeper values.
The Apostle Paul prayed for us in this area,
I pray that from His glorious, unlimited resources He will empower you with inner strength through His Spirit. Then Christ will make His home in your hearts as you trust in Him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is, Ephesians 3:16-18 NLT
Strength Training
Intentionally training strength in each of these three areas, spiritual, mental, and physical makes us truly resilient. We will become capable of standing and continuing to stand in resistance the enemy. It will help us endure, adapt, and thrive in any challenge. May Paul’s prayer inspire us to pray in alignment with God’s word. And may we take the initiative and make the effort to grow deeper and stronger in our walk with Him.
