While Jesus was in the Temple, he watched the rich people dropping their gifts in the collection box. Then a poor widow came by and dropped in two small coins. “I tell you the truth,” Jesus said, “this poor widow has given more than all the rest of them. For they have given a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has.” Luke 21:1-4 NLT
I see myself in this poor widow as I rebuild my strength after last year’s setback. It’s easy to see how this verse applies to our financial giving, but what about the broader implications of this passage? What health and wellness stewardship principles exist in this story for us modern-day disciples?
I am the oldest member of the Belize National Powerlifting Team. And the oldest athlete that my coach works with. If I go just by the numbers, every athlete on my squad can outlift me. Seriously, even the 16-year-old is putting up numbers beyond my current reach. As envy rears its head in my thoughts, I console myself by repeating, “I’m still rebuilding from shoulder surgery.” “I’m still rebuilding from shoulder surgery.” “I’m STILL rebuilding from shoulder surgery!” It is easy to feel sorry for myself or doubt my capacity when I see the PRs (personal records) they are accumulating, those Instagram reels featuring the latest music, or the number of likes and comments others get on social media. But, God. God reminds me that He has other plans for me.
He snatches me out of that pity party, makes me stand up straight, and reminds me to act like I have caught a few drops of the wisdom He has been pouring out over my life for 61 years.
Given Everything
Jesus notices that the widow has given everything she has—everything she had to live on. She gives not just a portion of her resources, a token amount, or a percentage—she has given everything!
Just like the widow, my weakened physical state is all I have to give. I don’t know how much anyone else is giving of themselves, so comparison is futile, and in reality, it’s none of my business. Each workout, each walk, each choice regarding the stewardship of the body He has given me, is my everything. Whatever state you find yourself in, dear one, God sees you giving your all. All that you have right where you are spiritually, mentally, emotionally, physically, and financially. He sees when we have given everything to Him out of all that we have and all that we are. And He can use it, for His glory, however He sees fit.
*For those of you who prayer walk, meditate on the phrase ‘given everything’ and listen to the soul-stirring whispers from the Holy Spirit on your journey.
